Schutzhund (German for "protection dog"): Developed in 1901 in Germany specifically for the German Shepherd breed. The initial purpose of this sport was to help breeders determine which dogs should be bred based on their true working ability. Dogs titled in this sport were used for police training, border patrol, customs, military and herding. Testing scenarios consist of tracking over mixed terrain, advanced obedience and controlled protection scenarios.
American Protection and Patrol Dog Association: A group of professional and civilian working dog trainers, who wanted to engage in a program that would bring their dogs to a higher standard. This program includes realistic, practical applications for the Personal Protection Dog (PPD) and the Police Service Dog (PSD). Members will be able to test their abilities and gain the confidence to react in a true scenario if confronted. The over all goal is to educate the dog team through reality based scenarios in the likelihood that our dogs may one day be put to the ultimate test.
Irondog: Originally intended for the American Bulldog but is now an all breed inclusive test which evaluates the overall strength, endurance, power, speed and courage of its’ competitors. The Guard Dog Test (GDT) evaluates basic obedience and natural protective nature of the dog. The Irondog Triathlon 3 (IDT 3) test consists of a 50 yard dash, weight pull and hardest hitting.
